HOOFDDORP, The Netherlands -- January 20, 2004 -- Irdeto Access, a subsidiary of multinational media group Naspers (NASDAQ: NPSN and JSE: NPN) and a world leader in content protection solutions, announced today that German-based Arab Radio and Television (ART) GmbH signed a license agreement for the implementation of Irdeto Access' compact conditional access system, Irdeto M-Crypt, to secure its ART and PEHLA programs in Europe.
Arab Radio and Television GmbH will launch a new bouquet called PEHLA which will contain mainly Indian content. This bouquet will be secured with Irdeto M-Crypt, a content protection solution from Irdeto Access. The bouquet includes Sony Entertainment Television's GeoTV, StarPlus, and Ten Sport, among other services. In addition, Irdeto M-Crypt will secure the Arabesque bouquet in simulcrypt mode, enabling owners of a set-top box or Common Interface Conditional Access Module (CI-CAM) that contains Irdeto Access' conditional access technology to view the bouquet if they purchase a subscription from ART.
Mr. Dirk Hollstein, managing director from Arab Radio and Television GmbH said: "The already existing large base of decoders containing Irdeto Access conditional access within the Asian community in Europe was the main reason why we selected Irdeto Access' conditional access solution to secure the PEHLA bouquet."
Graham Kill, CEO of Irdeto Access said: "Arab Radio and Television GmbH already deploys Irdeto Access' content protection solutions in the Middle East, Latin America, and Australia. We are very pleased to further strengthen our relationship with Arab Radio and Television GmbH with this additional license agreement that enables them to grow their content revenue."
Irdeto Access developed Irdeto M-Crypt, an industry-leading compact content protection solution for encrypting and managing content on any transmission platform including cable, satellite, or terrestrial. Designed specially for small- to medium-sized businesses, the system operates on a Windows 2000-based platform for simplified control and maintenance, and features a built-in compact subscriber management system to prevent additional investment in a customer care system. Irdeto M-Crypt is easily scalable which allows the operator to upgrade smoothly to Irdeto PIsys - the company's large-scale CA system - without changing smart cards or STBs in the field.
