Teleprompters and Prompting Software

Teleprompters, or prompters for short, make life easier for on-screen talent. Prompters allow talent to read the script while looking at the camera. Typically, teleprompters consist of a standalone or camera-mounted mirror and monitor combinations. Mirrors are "one-way" and allow the light from the teleprompter to reflect while still allowing light from the scene to pass through to the camera.

Systems can consist of a document camera and motorized paper feed, but most often are computer-based software/hardware. Text can be sized, displayed on one or more monitors and often a hardware controller rather than a mouse is used to control the speed of the text. Normally only a few words at a time are displayed, as the text size can be large to allow for easy reading at a distance.

When purchasing a teleprompter, items to consider include:
  • Intended use: stage, podium or camera. For camera applications will they be studio or field?
  • Size and weight appropriate for tripod.
  • Power consumption/battery life for field units.
  • Monitor type, composite video, VGA or multiple input? Some applications such as chroma-key use (Weather wall) need to allow for a video input rather than a computer input.
  • Ability to "flip" the display to allow for alternate mounting configurations.
  • File import capability to allow use with your scripting software.
  • Television/news applications need to interface with newsroom applications and may require interfacing with a closed caption inserter.
